PSA to printed zine makers

As a 37 year old who’s been running a sole proprietorship for the last 10+ years, I just want everyone who is planning to run a fandom project that involves accepting money for printing & shipping costs to know that you’re actually running a small business and you need to plan for taxes. It doesn’t matter if you don’t make any profit: that is business income and the IRS will see it as such if you get audited.

If you only take enough money in to cover the cost of printing & shipping then you can write that off as a business expense and probably not pay taxes on it, But in order for that to fly you actually have to do business accounting, especially if you’re doing it at scale. Like, you can probably skate by without reporting a $500 project; I absolutely would not fucking risk it with a $5000 project.

Back when I was producing shows there were years when I was where I made $20k in ticket sales only to turn around and immediately pay $18k to my performers. I only made $2k for myself, but I had to report the entire $20k, because it was ALL INCOME. (I only paid taxes on the $2000, because that’s how writing off expenses works!)

Yeah this is boring grownup shit and I’m getting my boring grownup fingers all over your fun fandom, but boring grownups doing boring grownup things are the reason fandom spaces exist at all (paying for servers is deeply boring), and I’m way more fun than an audit

if i told you what rhis sounded ljke i dont think youd believe me so just listen

the song is also on bandcamp for pwyw

the story behind the song is also very good

last year we needed new songs so in the style of the who’s “a quick one” album where all the members wrote at least a couple songs each, we decided to challenge ourselves and each write a song to present to the band. alan wrote “how lucky am i?” emerson wrote “oxycontin” and matt wrote a yet-unreleased tune called “quarter two”

our drummer casey, put it off til the last minute. on the day the song was due, with two hours left, he woke up in a panic, smoked a bowl, and presented us “Ængus, The Prize-Winning Hog” by plunking each note out on a piano with his index finger. it turned into a full polka-rock-nu-metal-1960’s-British-car-chase-Queen-esque-mini-opera.

So what this paint company does is take iron pollution from abandoned mines that are polluting soils and rivers and makes iron based red pigment paints out of it.

Basically they realized hey no oneโ€™s cleaning this shit up, itโ€™s polluting the streams, killing all the fish, making the water undrinkable and thereโ€™s a huge market for it so why not make money by cleaning it the fuck up?

image

They remove this stuff by the industrial bucket load from the rivers. The idea is if itโ€™s in a painting, if itโ€™s in your home, itโ€™s not poisoning wildlife.

imagine you’re in a timeloop and everything goes exactly the same every time, except for a random user that just posts completely differently each loop. sometimes they don’t post at all. they never post about the timeloop, though

during one loop you message them to ask if they know what’s going on and they immediately block you and go back to posting

I love that amid the stress of being caught in a temporal paradox you are checking tumblr dot com

nothing better to do
